We describe a set of functions that allows the R user to take advantage of the Hadoop framework. Hadoop is an open source implementation of Google's map-reduce – a programming model for processing large data sets. Using Hadoop, the R user can run 'embarrassingly parallel' methods, manipulate very large data sets (in the order gigabytes even terabytes), and implement algorithms in R that can be translated in to the map-reduce model.
